Grief 04: Miscarriage—An Interview with Abbey Wedgeworth
As moms, the grief of miscarriage is a deeply intimate one. After the joy of a positive pregnancy test, the loss of that life in the womb brings deep devastation. In this episode, Emily and Laura sit down with Abbey Wedgeworth, author of Held: 31 Biblical Reflections of God’s Comfort and Care in the Sorrow of Miscarriage, to learn about how miscarriage impacts women, the ways a mom can remember the life of her child, and how the gospel meets us in the sting of death and sorrow. Even when our darkest fears in motherhood come to life, we can trust that no questions, doubts, or pain are beyond the reach of God’s sovereignty and care for us—one day, he will wipe every tear from our eyes and death will be no more (Rev 21:4).
Abbey Wedgeworth is the author of Held: 31 Biblical Reflections on God’s Comfort and Care in the Sorrow of Miscarriage and the host of the Held podcast. She and her husband, David, belong to Hilton Head Presbyterian Church (PCA) and live on the South Carolina coastline with their three young sons. If you’ve experienced a miscarriage, have you felt freedom to bring your questions of ‘why’ before the Lord? Spend some time in prayer, sharing feelings of doubt or hurt that arise as you ask for his comfort in your pain.
What areas of your life have you been tempted to feel guilt? Spend some time reflecting on the truths Abbey shares for a mom experiencing guilt in miscarriage, and pray that the Lord will seed them in your heart:
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)
There is nothing that happens outside the providential will of God.
Our bodies are affected by the fall, but being a human with limits is not inherently sinful. Give yourself grace.
There is no shame in grieving what has been lost.
Abbey shares an in-depth look at what a mom experiencing miscarriage walks through in the days, weeks, and years that follow. How might this change the way you respond to and comfort a friend or loved one who is grieving a miscarriage? Consider a few tangible ways you could serve a mom and honor the life of her child.
Read Psalm 139:23-24. Regardless of our experiences, we all encounter situations where we may feel hurt or pain when someone receives a blessing that we desperately wish to call our own. How does this passage remind us that God counsels us in the midst of our pain, and leads us in the way everlasting (v. 24)?
