Abide 01: The Thing You Really Need in Motherhood

When we’re struggling with mom guilt, burnout, keeping up with housework, and more, where should we turn for help and hope? While fresh resources, support from others, creative hacks, and advice from other moms are helpful and important, one source of truth outlasts and supersedes all others: God’s Word. In this episode, Emily and Laura discuss the importance of God’s Word in the life of a mom, troubleshoot the most common barriers to studying it, and share the inspiration behind this Scripture-heavy series. As we study the story of God’s promises and faithfulness to his people throughout history, we can trust that he is faithful to work in our lives, too.

At Risen Motherhood, we use The Abide Method for studying the Bible. Similar to the Inductive Bible Study method, this is a way of studying the Bible that puts God first. As image-bearers of God, we can only understand ourselves correctly through the lens of who God is, carefully studying the character and purposes of God, as revealed in Scripture. This is critical to a Christian's growth and maturity.

Engaging in a deliberate and dedicated study of God's word can feel slow and difficult at times. It will mean some frustration, questions and learning to live deep in the "I don't know." But over time, seeking to understand the true meaning of God's word provides a backdrop for gospel-centered thinking, allowing us to discern truth and make wise decisions through a biblical lens.

Ultimately, proper study of the scriptures will increase our knowledge of God transforming us into his image as the affections of our heart follow our minds. "[For when we] behold the glory of the Lord [we are] transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another." (2 Corinthians 3:18)

R|M Apply Questions:

  • What expectations do you have of “quiet time” that may need to be adjusted in this season of motherhood? Consider one area of your day—even if it’s only a few minutes—where you could allot time to read Scripture this week.

  • Read Hebrews 4:12. What does this verse tell us about God’s Word, and how does it encourage you to devote more time to understanding and applying Scripture?

  • Reach out to a friend and ask if she’ll join you for 30 days of studying Scripture together. Download the Abide Method, and walk through each step together. (P.S. This can happen anywhere, in any format! A coffee shop, your living room, Voxer, you name it!)

  • Think of some of the emotions you experience throughout the week: maybe it’s a feeling of overwhelm when you’re trying to get dinner on the table, or guilt when you can’t seem to get all of the kiddos out the door on time in the morning. Identify one Bible verse or passage of Scripture about the hope and help you have in Christ that you can think about deeply this week. (Consider writing it on a post-it note or putting it in an easy-to-see location for quick reference!).
